Another person has died at a local NHS hospital after contracting coronavirus as infection rates continue to rise across the county.

This is the second day in a row that a coronavirus death has been recorded in Berkshire, with both deaths occurring at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Since the start of the pandemic, 504 people have died from the virus in the trust, while a total of 1,784 people have died in the county’s three NHS trusts.

Meanwhile, Berkshire continued to record a high number of new coronavirus cases, with 82 new cases recorded in today’s official update from Public Health England.

The highest number was seen in Readding where 24 new cases were found. Wokingham has also reported a high number of cases after recording 17 positive test results.

Bracknell Forest, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead have all recorded 12 new cases each, while West Berkshire has reported five.

Today’s figures bring the total number of coronavirus cases in the county to 58,760 since the start of the pandemic.

Coronavirus infection rates also continue to rise in most parts of Berkshire.

Bracknell Forest has the highest seven-day rolling infection rate at 98.7 cases per 100,000 people, up from 97.9 yesterday.

Only Reading and Wokingham have not seen their rates rise, although both still have particularly high infection rates. Reading’s rate stands at 84.7 cases per 100,000 people, while Wokingham’s rate is 91.7.

The national rate for the UK is now 55.2.

The government said 17 more people died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 on Friday, bringing the UK total to 127,884.

Separate figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that there have been 153,000 registered deaths in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The government also said as of 9 a.m. on Friday there had been 8,125 other laboratory-confirmed cases in the UK.
