Cristiano Ronaldo doubtful for Manchester United due to neck problem
Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt for Manchester United’s game against West Ham with a neck complaint.
After missing two games with a hip bending problem, the 36-year-old leader returned in Wednesday’s 3-1 Premier League win at Brentford.
Ronaldo grabbed headlines with his reaction to being taken off in the second half by caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick, who revealed the striker could be out entirely on Saturday.
“Cristiano is a question mark because he has a problem with his neck,” he told MUTV.
“He received treatment yesterday for two or three hours and we will have to wait and see how he feels today.
“Edi (Cavani) hasn’t trained with the team yet and hopefully will start training again today, then we’ll make the final decision after today’s training session, if he will be available for tomorrow’s game.”
Ronaldo was a hot topic after making it clear to everyone that he didn’t appreciate being substituted against Brentford.
Rangnick immediately attempted to air the matter publicly and again stated that he understood the player’s frustration, but would rather it not be played out in public.

“I didn’t see or interpret that as challenging me at all,” Rangnick said. “He just showed, maybe too emotionally, that he wasn’t happy to be substituted.
“But it wasn’t the first time. I think if you look at the times when Sir Alex (Ferguson) replaced him or other coaches, (Maurizio) Sarri or whoever replaced him in the past, his reaction was quite similar.
“It shows that in the end it has nothing to do with the manager at the time leading the team. It’s about his own ambition and his own desire to stay on the pitch.
“But, again, it’s a team sport and for us it’s important for us to get the most out of every game, the maximum points. At the end of the day, it’s a decision of each manager.
“What do we need right now to secure the game, to make sure we win the game? And what kind of weapons do we need on the pitch to be able to score on the counter-attack?

“I’m not someone who says after the fact ‘listen, everything was perfect, we did well’. But in this case, all the things I hoped that would come out of this decision were finally confirmed.
“I think if at some point Cristiano will be coaching himself maybe in a few years, or maybe as late as 10 years if he’s playing another five years, he himself will have the same experience.
“Again, I don’t blame him for that, but obviously any manager, I think, would like it not to be too emotional, let alone in front of the television cameras.
“I don’t think it will be to anyone’s advantage – not to their advantage, or to the advantage of teammates or others.
“At the end of the day it’s an emotional game, the players are emotional and I didn’t take it personally at all.”
