Dortmund happy to keep Reinier amid reports Real Madrid want to cut loan and send Brazilian teenager to Valladolid

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc is keen to keep Reinier as the teenager’s loan from Real Madrid could be cut short.

Reinier joined Dortmund on a two-year loan from Madrid last August, but the 18-year-old has struggled to make an impact for the Bundesliga club.

Reports in Spain claim that Madrid are looking to end the deal earlier and send the Brazilian on loan to Valladolid, which is owned by striker Ronaldo’s compatriot.

Why is this important?

When Reinier signed for Dortmund last summer, it was with the intention of playing regularly to gain first-team experience before returning to seek a place in the Madrid squad.

However, Reinier has yet to start a competitive game for Dortmund since moving to Germany. He has only made four substitute matches in the Bundesliga, while playing twice on the bench in the Champions League and once in DFB-Pokal.

Arriving in Madrid from Flamengo with a huge reputation 12 months ago, reports suggest the Spanish giants fear Reinier’s development is stalling due to his lack of action.

What was said?

“We have a lot of competition on offense,” Zorc said. Sport1 on the back of the reports, Reinier’s loan will be cut short.

“Basically, we don’t want to give it up. Of course, I will listen to everything. If someone is dissatisfied because they have too few opportunities, then you talk to each other, but we will not take the initiative ourselves.

The bigger picture

Reiner hasn’t had the easiest times since moving to Dortmund and tested positive for the coronavirus in November after returning from international duty with the Brazilian Under-23 squad.

Moreover, Dortmund could be reluctant to lose a talented player from their squad after seeing Axel Witsel likely ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining an Achilles tendon injury in Saturday’s win over RB Leipzig.

Zorc has confirmed that Dortmund have no plans to sign a replacement for Witsel and this could increase opportunities for Reinier to make his mark in the second half of the season.
