A MAIDENHEAD theater will officially open its doors and mark the occasion with a VIP performance of the musical Matilda Jr.

Furze Platt Secondary School, Maidenhead completed work on its new state-of-the-art space in May 2020.

Due to covid, the school, on Furze Platt Road, initially delayed its opening and used it as a testing center instead in March 2021.

Since then the has been used for assemblies and exams and the school is now preparing to thank those who donated to its crowdfunding campaign to raise money to build it.

Companies and individuals who have made significant donations will join school staff at a special VIP event to watch the show on February 16.

Principal Dr Andrew Morrison said: “Students and staff are thrilled to have our new theater host our school show, Matilda Jr.

“The show and the theater have been in the works for a long time and I would like to thank everyone who has supported the FPSS with this superb space.

“For a high school to have such a large professional theater is amazing and I can’t wait to see the students feed on the energy of the audience as they entertain us.”

Grade 9 student Freya Stevenson, 14, will play the lead role of Matilda in the production.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I was in the lead, I was thrilled and still am.

“Rehearsals are always great fun and I’ve made lots of friends with people from all age groups who have given me great advice and inspired my progress in developing my character, Matilda.

“I can’t wait for the first show, and I hope you can’t either.”
