Drivers will be required to follow a detour while the section between Junction 8/9 for Maidenhead and Junction 6 for Slough is closed. All traffic will be diverted from the motorway to the A308M, A308 and A355 or that road in the opposite direction.
Motorists are cautioned to expect delays and to allow more time for their journeys, seeking alternative routes if possible.
Highways England’s smart motorway project on the M4 is expected to cost £ 848million and is expected to be completed in 2022.
The motorway will be transformed into four lanes of traffic between Exit 3 for Hayes and Exit 12 for Theale, with refuge points along the route.
The highway must also be closed at the same place the following weekend.
There will be a full weekend closure between Junctions 6 for Slough and Junctions 8/9 for Maidenhead from Friday May 21st through Monday May 24th.
