M4 drivers face a longer trip than usual after the motorway closes when a sweeper rolls over.

The accident occurred on the westbound carriageway of the motorway between Exit 13 at Chieveley / Newbury and Exit 14 at Hungerford.

The road was closed for accident investigation work after the incident at around 9:05 a.m. and emergency services are on site.

National Highways says it’s likely the road will be closed until around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, December 6, although that may well change.

Long queues form around the incident and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

Diversion route

  • A detour has been put in place which will allow motorists to leave the motorway at exit 13 towards the A34.
  • From there they should follow the A34 towards Newbury, then take the A4.
  • After that they must join the A338 via Newbury and Hungerford before joining junction 14.
