Matt Chapman’s Monday Yeeehaaa – Queen’s horse King’s Lynn is very unlucky but will come well for Andrew Balding
IF Oisin Murphy couldn’t sleep after losing to King’s Lynn at Royal Ascot, then Ryan Moore has yet to be zoned after the colt’s nightmarish race at Wokingham!
Under Murphy, King’s Lynn was seventh in King’s Stand behind Oxted – leading in this column – and third with Moore in Wokingham ahead of the greatly improved Rohaan.
Murphy, Ascot’s best rider of the week, said: “I was wrong on King’s Lynn. I should have known they were going so fast and the pace was going to crumble. I was following the right ones – why should I move when I got the first and second favorite in my eyes?

“I fell into a dead end. I didn’t sleep Tuesday night.”
King’s Lynn, owned by the Queen, has been one of the most unlucky horses of the entire season and is a great example of a trainer knowing he has a good one in his hands.
Manager Andrew Balding has had a glint in his eye on King’s Lynn since the start of the season. They had.
We see it in the way the horse campaigned.
Balding started it at a disability company in Newbury, where the form worked really well.
Despite being beaten, King’s Lynn was sent alongside Chester for a race in conditions where, ranked 95, he was barely hit by the 106 El Astronaut.
Still poorly in the rankings, Balding sent King’s Lynn to Haydock for a Listed event he won, and then he was in Group 1 company ranked 107. At Wokingham, he was ranked 100.
Basically Balding knew he had at least one Group 2 sprinter on his hands, maybe even better.

Baldness was exceptional at Royal Ascot. He’s having an incredible season. He’s just really good. Class.
Back at Ascot, I was delighted to see James Doyle on the scoresheet in the Godolphin’s Creative Force jersey.
Now don’t get me wrong, as Doyle makes a decent living with Godolphin, but having been Nr1 for the late Prince Khalid Abdullah and Nr1 for Speed bin Suroor, he is now picking up the pieces in Godolphin to some extent. He’s so talented he deserves to win in places like Ascot.
A mention also for Chris Wright, the owner of Wonderful Tonight, who bombarded his estate for the very talented and fun – albeit French – David Menuisier.

Chris has had a lot of good horses over the years and deserves all the success that comes with throwing money at a game for so long.
He was also one of the owners who enjoyed winning the Breeders ‘Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf with Chriselliam in 2013 only for the filly suffering soon after and needing to be shot.
He’s had ups and downs. And always wanted more.
We love seeing your colors Chris, and I hope you had a wonderful night after the success of Wonderful Tonight. I guess you did!
Royal Ascot gets a ‘Yeeehaaa’ from this column. Hope you enjoyed all of this on ITV and thank you to all the jockeys, boys and girls who spoke to me so well after the races.
You make the sport even more exciting and dramatic for all of us.
