McDonald’s fan tries ‘brilliant’ Big Mac trick that saves you money

A McDonald’s fan has found a tip for Big Mac lovers. The fast food chain’s iconic burger is priced at £3.39, but you can get it for less.

A journalist from surrey live decided to test put the hack, and see how well it works. A Big Mac burger consists of two 1.6 oz beef patties, iceberg lettuce, a slice of cheese, onions, pickles and the aforementioned sauce, all housed in a seeded bun. sesame with an extra layer in the middle.

For just £1.79 (at least at the Guildford branch) you can order your own personalized Big Mac that’s pretty close to the real deal. And with the cost of living crisis, the homemade burger is a great substitute for people looking to save a few pennies while still enjoying food. It has been highlighted by Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert website as a way to save money when visiting Maccies.

All you have to do is follow these steps:

  • Order a double cheeseburger for £1.79
  • Add extra lettuce
  • Add extra onions

  • Add extra pickles

  • Add extra mayonnaise

  • Add extra mustard

All extras can be added for free, whether you do so through the self-service machine (like I did) or at the counter. Based on a Big Mac costing £3.39, this custom build is just over 50% of a Big Mac, saving you £1.60.

First, let’s get rid of the negatives: there’s no three-sesame seed bread, no Big Mac sauce, and it takes longer to order than just saying or typing “Big Mac.”

But for the money you save, it’s an awesome hack. What really did it for me was the addition of the mayonnaise mixed with mustard and tomato ketchup. This added extra creaminess to the Big Mac sauce.

Adding the lettuce also brings your mouth back into Big Mac territory. Although I like a three sesame seed bun, I didn’t notice much difference except that I may have eaten the burger faster overall because there was less chewing food.

I can’t say that I’ll give up on Big Macs anymore after this revelation. But this puffy cheeseburger is a great substitute if you’re looking for something a little lighter and cheaper than a Big Mac.
