A newborn baby has died weeks after being injured in a car accident in Longview that also claimed the life of the baby’s mother, 26, and injured two others.
The only rollover accident occurred in the early morning of September 19 on Industrial Way near 26th Avenue. Police said the vehicle was traveling west on State Road 432, or Industrial Way, when the SUV rolled over multiple times and crashed upside down on its roof near a drainage quagmire .
Passers-by pulled the newborn and 5-year-old out of the deformed SUV.
According to the State Patrol, the driver, Celeste A. Williams, 26, died at the scene. The passengers, Ryson D. Nicholson, 19, of Longview, and a 5-year-old child were taken to St. John’s Medical Center with injuries sustained in the crash.
The newborn was rushed to Oregon Health & Science University’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, where the child later died.
A relative of the family, Mary Jo Locke, said Williams and Nicholson are siblings and the two minors are Williams’ children. Locke said Williams was driving the youngster to school at the time of the crash.
The police had to use their winch to retrieve the SUV from the quagmire so firefighters could reach Williams trapped inside the SUV.
The SUV Williams was driving was declared a total wreck and the crash is still under investigation by law enforcement.
