Newbury Care Home invites local residents to learn more about dementia
A care home in Newbury is helping build a dementia-friendly community with a series of free events.
To mark Dementia Awareness Week, Care UK’s Winchcombe Place on Maple Crescent is hosting three virtual events for people with dementia and their caregivers.
On Tuesday, May 18, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., locals are invited to attend a Friends of Dementia session led by the home’s Customer Relations Manager, Vicki Lambourne.
The event is part of a national program launched by the Alzheimer Society that aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about dementia.
On Wednesday, May 19, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Winchcombe Place team will welcome Senior Nurse Practitioner Jennifer Hall for her online conference on Advanced Dementia.
This will cover a range of topics, including changes in the brain and body, communication, sensitivity and the environment, as well as behavior and end-of-life care.
Finally, the team will end the week with an online dementia-friendly exercise session with state of mind massage on Friday, May 21 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., open to the community as well as their loved ones and caregivers. .
The event will involve gentle and fun movements, while listening to musical favorites from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, with a brief talk on the importance of staying active.
Miss Lambourne said, “As Dementia Awareness Week approaches, we would like to share our expertise here at Winchcombe Place and support the community as we can.
“We know how difficult it can be to care for a friend or relative with dementia, which is why we have organized a week filled with events and counseling activities designed for people. the elderly and their loved ones.
“We hope to provide professional knowledge and insights to those in need, as well as provide a hub for shared experiences.
“We want people to know that they are not alone, and we are here to offer our support, so we look forward to virtually welcoming the locals for an inspiring week of information and advice.”
