Seven for Halifax in FA Cup thriller against Maidenhead
FC Halifax reached the second round of the FA Cup with an incredible 7-4 victory over their other National League team, Maidenhead, at The Shay.
The Shaymens opened the floodgates when Tyrell Warren returned home to Matty Warbuton’s corner in 10 minutes.
Maidenhead responded immediately when goalkeeper Sam Johnson fired a shot and forward Josh Kelly shot in the rebound.
In a frantic opening, playmaker Warbuton restored the lead to Halifax with a sleek bass finish before Emile Acquah reached the level of Maidenhead three minutes later.
Pete Wild’s men were dominant and Kian Spence scored spectacularly from a distance before forward Billy Waters scored his ninth goal of the season for a well-deserved fourth.
But Acquah finished a dramatic half with his second as the Magpies reduced the deficit.
Jordan Slew improvised Halifax’s fifth goal in the 55th minute after a great interaction between Waters and Jack Senior.
Waters came home moments later for six minutes before Kelly hit a left-footed fourth for the Magpies at the break.
Substitute Elliot Newby scored seven with a scuffed effort after Slew’s shot was blocked for the endemic hosts.
Maidenhead remained resilient and fought for more goals, but a remarkable tie ended with Halifax in Monday’s second-round draw.
