Smoke from ‘serious’ wildfire in Yateley could be seen in Wokingham
Smoke from a wildfire near Sandhurst yesterday could be ‘seen as far as Wokingham’.
Berkshire Fire Brigade and 15 fire engines were called to tackle the blaze as it spread to Yateley Common at 11.30am.
The cause of the fire is unknown, according to a station chief with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Wokingham-based photographer Paul King said the height of the blaze meant he could see smoke six miles away.
“This hot, dry weather means fires like the one crews fought at Yateley Common can get very serious, very quickly,” a Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said.

“Please be very careful and if you spot a fire call immediately and stay away.”
The dry conditions are thought to have helped the fire spread, having left ferns and pine cones like kindling.
