Thatcham fire today: What we know so far A4 has closed as firefighters tackle the blaze

Firefighters remain at the scene of a blaze which closed a major road in Berkshire today, Tuesday June 7. Emergency services were called to a commercial building fire near the junction of Bath Road and Green Lane, Thatcham.
There is a closure in place on the A4 Bath Road following the fire. The road is currently closed in both directions so traffic is moving slowly on the surrounding roads.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 3:53 p.m. The fire involves acetylene cylinders and a cordon remains in place – with some people currently unable to return home.

A spokesman for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 3.53pm on Tuesday June 7, we received reports of a fire in a commercial premises at the junction of Bath Road and Green Lane in Thatcham Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service teams from Newbury, Windsor and Theale are currently on the scene alongside an incident command unit and two officers.
“Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in a single storey building and remain at the scene. A cordon is in place and people are advised to avoid the area while emergency services attend. this incident. This incident involves acetylene cylinders and may continue for at times.”
Inrix, the traffic data company, said: “A4 Bath Road closed in both directions, traffic slow due to building fire from Tull Way (Henwick) to Floral Way (Colthrop). Officers confirm that the entire length of the road was closed around 4:45 p.m.
A spokesman for West Berkshire Council said: “We are currently responding to the incident on the A4 in Thatcham in conjunction with our emergency service colleagues. Please avoid the area where possible.
