An area of Berkshire has recorded more than 100 cases of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

The highest number of new cases has been recorded in Wokingham, where 113 cases were reported yesterday (Tuesday 12 October).

It is the only region in Berkshire that recorded more than 100 cases that day.

The rest of the regions recorded new double-digit cases.

It comes as a leading scientist has warned the UK may have to return to lockdowns if new strains that may escape current vaccines are identified.

Dr Marc Baguelin, a member of the government SPI-M modeling group, said: “We would most likely be able to update current vaccines to include the emerging strain.

“But that would take months and mean we may have to reimpose restrictions if there was a significant risk to public health.”
