While making picks for Westmoreland County Finals, Birdie sees red on the freeway towards Heinz

Last week: 2-0 (100%)
Season: 97-37 (72.4%)
Whether packaged or bottled, the Birdie has an obsession with ketchup.
An unhealthy obsession with Heinz ketchup.
Since last week, when Penn-Trafford and Belle Vernon won the semifinals to advance to the WPIAL final on Saturday at Heinz Field, he’s been putting ketchup on everything.
The red spots on his TribLive HSSN polo shirt tell the story.
It’s his way of saying to his colleagues, fans and readers, “I told you so.
“What’s so wrong with that?” he asked, eating frozen ketchup ice cream. “I saw Belle Vernon players squirt ketchup in their mouths after this victory I won against Thomas Jefferson. You didn’t think it was that bad. I told yinz that we would have two teams at Heinz. How do you love me now?
Westmoreland County’s past football master has gone too far. A photographer caught him, well, red-handed, in the dining room.
He put ketchup on his morning bagel, his cold afternoon pizza, and his spaghetti for dinner. He even tried it on his late night ice cream bowl.
– You would be surprised, he said. “It goes well with a lot of things – 57 varieties.”
He also plans to supplement his Thanksgiving feast with the tomato condiment.
“It’s time to celebrate our teams’ trip to Heinz,” Birdie said, squeezing ketchup from a packet into her mouth. “Real champions put ketchup on everything. As Bill Hillgrove says, we are entering the Heinz red zone; get thick and rich Heinz Ketchup.
The Birdie, who is 9-2 in the playoffs, believe the fun will continue for Penn-Trafford and Belle Vernon, teams he declared at the start of the season would be his golden ticket.
“I’m on my game, folks,” he said. “You know I can still cut the mustard.”
• Penn-Trafford (10-2) against Moon (12-0): Penn-Trafford is 0 for 3 in the WPIAL Finals, but the Buffalo Bills-style stigma ends here. The Warriors are going to put in a full effort, showing why they’ve come this far. The line will be pushed, the racing game will flourish and the special teams will be sharp and strong. The defense will bend a bit, but Moon won’t do enough offensively. Both teams have allowed 146 points, but Moon will allow a few more. Penn Trafford, 23-16
• Belle Vernon (10-0) against Aliquippa (10-1): Belle Vernon players wore college and pro jerseys to practice Thursday and some donned returning Leopards tops. The Leopards will be outfitted for the WPIAL champions jerseys after Saturday’s big win. The offense will splash out against a solid Quips defense, take advantage of a turnover or two and put pressure on the quarterback to win his second title. Belle Vernon, 20-19
