Your weekend women’s football picks
Our women’s football correspondent, Abi Ticehurst, picks three matches for the weekend across our women’s football pyramid this season.
1. Woodley United Ladies v Long Crendon Ladies First
Berks & Bucks Senior Cup – First Round
Woodley United are a much improved side in the 2022/23 season and are proving to be an ambitious side. They go straight into the County Cup tie after a hard-fought FA Cup loss to Brentford after being on the feet for 90 minutes. They kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over fellow Berkshire side Eversley & California after reassessing things over the summer break and opting to move to the new Division One North of the Southern Region Women’s Football League. Opponents Long Crendon are new to the league after being promoted during the pyramid reshuffle, so this should be a good test for Woodley.
Bulmershe Pavilion, Woodlands Avenue, RG5 3HE, Sunday, 2 p.m. Please check with the host club before travelling.
2. Ascot United Ladies Reserves v Slough Town FC Ladies
Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League Division 1
Ascot are newly promoted to the division having fought their way through Division Three East the previous season, they will be there to prove a point after being pushed back two divisions in the pyramid restructuring. Their game-winning strike continues after a convincing 8-0 win over Banbury United Ladies First in their season opener. Can they keep the undefeated momentum going for a second season. Amy Cogdon could be their new star striker for the season with Clodagh Farrell in college after her impressive tally of 27 goals in 2021/22. Slough won’t be fooled though, they had a very steady start in Division Two last season and have rightfully earned their place in Division One, they both saw victory over Banbury United in their first game of this season with five goals and Alice Heady netted a brace to open her roster for the Rebels early on.
Jubilee Recreation Ground, North Ascot, SL5 8JA, Sunday, 2pm. Please check with the host club before travelling.
3. Caversham AFC Women v Shinfield Rangers Women
Thames Valley Countys Women’s Football League Division 3 South
Another team expected to move up the TVCWFL ranks are Shinfield Rangers Women as they picked the teams one by one in the development division in the 2021/22 season they started the new season in division three south with similar intentions. as they remained 2 ahead of Eversley & California Development on opening day. That said, Caversham AFC have been recruiting well in recent seasons and that squad depth shone through last term when they finished mid-table after struggling seriously in the 2019/20 period. Pia Davis remains their player to watch with her quick feet and eye for goal.
The whole division looks like an exciting challenge as many of our Berkshire teams compete for promotion spots in a seemingly competitive table.
Emmer Green, Reading, RG4 8LN, Sunday, 2 p.m. Please check with the host club before travelling.
Honorable mentions to Maidenhead United who face the long and tricky journey to Exeter City as they return to National League action and Reading who will make the trip to the Amex to face Brighton & Hove Albion in the WSL, vital points needed for both sides at the start of the season.
